AI agent pricing: what each plan really buys

A plan's monthly price says less than its limits, because an agent may keep working for hours and several plans meter all of that effort.

Personal agents are paid for in three ways. The big labs fold them into monthly subscriptions, from $19.99 for Google AI Pro to $500 for the top ChatGPT Pro tier, and the higher prices mostly buy headroom rather than features. That headroom is where the catch lies: an agent can work for hours, and depending on the plan its effort is counted in usage multiples, five-hour sessions or weekly token allowances. Muse adds a free tier with a weekly cap. OpenClaw costs nothing to install, but a model provider bills you for every token it reads and writes, plus a server if it does not live at home.

PlanPriceWhat you get
OpenClaw (self-hosted)
Full agent
Free No subscription and no paid edition: the software is free, and your monthly bill is whatever the connected model and the machine running it happen to cost.

What OpenClaw costs to run

Running OpenClaw on a computer you already own adds nothing to your hosting bill. An agent meant to stay on around the clock is better placed on a small VPS or a home server, and a rented VPS typically comes to about $5 to $20 a month. The installer supports macOS, Linux, WSL2 and Windows and brings Node along if it is missing, so there is no software to buy. Whatever the machine, the gateway should listen only on loopback and be reached through SSH or Tailscale rather than an exposed port.

The larger and less predictable cost is the model. You can pay per token with an API key, use a subscription you already have, or run a local model that costs nothing per token. List prices per million tokens range from $0.10 in and $0.50 out on GPT-6 Luna to $10 and $50 on GPT-6 Astra, with Claude Sonnet 5.5 and GPT-6.1 Sol both at $2 and $10 and Claude Opus 5.5 at $4 and $20. Because an agent resends its context at every step, the cached input rate often decides the bill, and your provider must also serve your country.

Typical task

Model fees, about $43.20 a month

These figures use list API prices and assume that half of each task's input tokens are served from cache at the cheaper rate and that a month has 30 days.

Questions readers ask

Which personal AI agent costs the least?

Muse Free and OpenClaw are the two routes with no subscription fee. Muse Free is open only to adults living in Canada and the US and still wants a payment card, while OpenClaw costs nothing as software, so you spend money only on the model it uses and the machine that hosts it. The cheapest paid options are Claude Pro at $20 and Google AI Pro, which costs $19.99 monthly but includes Gemini Spark only for US subscribers.

Can I save money on an AI agent by paying yearly?

Two plans in our table list a yearly price. Claude Pro falls from $20 to $17 a month when billed annually, and a ChatGPT Business Premium seat drops from $125 to $100. For the other plans we only have monthly prices, so check the checkout page before you commit to a year.

Do agent tasks count against my plan's usage limits?

It depends on the maker. Conversations with a Dot are not metered, yet any Codex or ChatGPT Work job it launches draws on your allowance, and OpenAI has published no figure for what proactive research consumes. Claude Max is measured per five-hour session as a multiple of Pro, while Muse counts tokens against a weekly allowance, so a long browsing errand costs more than many short questions.

Why does the same agent come in several price tiers?

The upper tiers mostly sell more usage, not more ability. Muse Power and Muse Maximum share one feature set, and Claude Max 20x offers nothing beyond Max 5x except a higher ceiling. The exceptions are ChatGPT Pro 500, which adds Astra Ultrafast, and Google AI Ultra at $199.99, which adds Google's experimental features.

How much does it cost to run a self-hosted AI agent?

OpenClaw itself is free and has no paid edition. The model provider charges you by the token or covers the agent under a plan you already pay for, unless you use a local model. Renting a small VPS so the agent never sleeps typically adds $5 to $20 a month, and hosting it at home removes that line entirely.
