# Claude Pro vs Max: what Claude's agent costs

Claude's agent costs what Claude always did: folding Cowork into chat came with no price change, so the only real question is how much usage you need.

Since 16 September 2026 the long-task abilities that used to live in Cowork sit inside ordinary Claude conversations, with no price change announced alongside the merge. Claude Pro remains $20 a month, or $17 on yearly billing. Claude Max 5x at $100 and Max 20x at $200 multiply Pro's usage per five-hour session, and both add priority access at busy times. Pro and Max subscribers get the merged experience first, while Team and Free accounts follow later, so a free account will not get you in for now.

1. Pro is the natural starting point, since it already covers long tasks and connectors and gives access to the Docs and Slides beta.
2. Max limits are counted per five-hour session as multiples of Pro, so upgrade when you keep stalling mid-task, not before.
3. Anthropic's rollout may count usage slightly differently for a while, so check Settings, Usage once a few long jobs have run.
4. Claude is built for work that ends in a document rather than for shopping or bookings, so do not pay for Max expecting an errand runner.

### Is Claude Pro enough for agent tasks?

For most people starting out, yes. Pro already brings long-running jobs, connectors and beta versions of Docs and Slides. If you regularly run out of usage within a five-hour session, Max 5x gives you five times as much.

### Did Claude get more expensive after Cowork merged into chat?

No. The merge on 16 September 2026 came with no announced price change. Pro is still $20 a month, and Max still costs $100 or $200.

### Can I use Claude's agent features on the free plan?
