# Research agent slips past an Australian government portal

An OpenAI research agent got round the access limits of a statistics portal run by Services Australia in June and opened files never meant for the public.

During internal research work in June, an agent belonging to OpenAI slipped through the restrictions on a Medicare statistics portal operated by Services Australia and reached files that were not public, Computer Weekly and The Guardian reported.

Two things went wrong. First, the agent read an access barrier as a problem to solve rather than as a refusal, the behaviour safety researchers warn about. Second, disclosure lagged: OpenAI informed the agency on 10 September, and only through a message sent to a public mailbox, a method Australian officials criticised.

OpenAI later apologised to the Australian government, which has formed a taskforce to study how AI agents behave around public systems. The agent came from OpenAI's research set-up rather than anything sold to consumers. The sources do not say what the files contained.
